Aoudad Sheep also known as Barbary Sheep were first introduced in 1948 to the desert mountains of West Texas and Southern New Mexico. This new home was so much like their native arid Atlas Mountains of North Africa that the animals flourished and are now considered native game in Texas.

Aoudad Sheep are one of the most challenging sheep species to hunt anywhere in the world.
They live in some of the roughest driest country imaginable. Bluffs and ledges in steep walled canyons are their home. They are very nomadic by nature and have the ability to obtain their water needs from dew and dry vegetation. They do not rely on dependable water sources to survive.
This has greatly expanded their territory and they now occupy most mountainous
West Texas Counties from Del Rio to the Texas Panhandle

Our Aoudad Sheep Hunts take place in the Glass Mountains of West Texas South of
Fort Stockton on one of the largest ranches in Texas consisting of more than 300,000 acres.
This ranch is home to incredible amount of Free Roaming Aoudad, Desert Mule Deer,
Pronghorn Antelope, Elk and abundant other wildlife.
The elevation ranges from 3200 ft - 5200 ft and has  perfect habitat for Aoudads with thousands of step walled canyons and draws for rams to reach mature age.
It is not uncommon to see more than 100 animals in one herd, although 20 to 50 is most common.

Hunting techniques vary and  there are times and circumstances that being in good physical condition will increase your success although its not imperative on this hunt.
We can accommodate hunters who are less physically fit,
or who have health or mobility problems.
The specially designed  Dune Buggies called Mountain Buggies take us to the edge of remote canyons to glass for sheep.
These Mountain Buggies can virtually go anywhere we need to go and allows us to cover huge amounts of country that otherwise would take weeks or longer on foot.

Our goal is to harvest large mature rams with over 28” horns or better.
Most of our Rams average 30” to 34” and we currently have several entries in,

SCI including a massive 38-½ inch ram.
Although we make no guarantees other than to do our best,
to provide you with a memorable hunt.
We have been 100% successful on mature rams 28” or better for the last 12 years,
and having over 468 Sq miles to hunt really improves your odds.
We take great pride in each animal we harvest.
Remember hunting is not just making the kill but that you enjoy yourself and experience the splendors of Texas while doing it.
The guides I use and myself are not just hunting guides we are professional hunters.
We do this for a living because we want to.
We know Aoudad Sheep and how to make your hunt a success so that you will come back again to hunt this challenging animal.

There are two lodges on the ranch.
The main lodge at the head quarters can accommodate large groups of up to 16 hunters.
It is mainly used for Mule Deer and Quail Hunts.
The sheep camp is 20 miles further into the ranch,
and is right in the middle of sheep country.
We can accommodate 6 hunters at this camp which has 3 bedrooms and two baths,
with all the amenities of home including satellite TV.
We serve breakfast and dinner at camp and lunch in the field.
We offer 3 and 4 day hunts depending on the size of your party.
Arriving the day before your hunt  by Flying into Midland/Odessa
and renting a car then making a 80 mile drive to Fort Stockton
where we will escort you into the ranch.  We also have a airstrip on the ranch.

Three days is normally plenty of time to harvest a Trophy Aoudad.
Although on larger groups of four or more a four day hunt should be considered.
An extra day may take the feeling of urgency away and let you be more selective and concentrate on a true Trophy.
Hunting success increases greatly when a hunter is familiar with his or her  rifle and practicing real life shooting situations will go a long ways in helping you enjoy your hunt,

Remember there are no shooting benches out here so don’t practice on one.
Flat shooting calibers such as .270 and larger sighted in at 3” high at 100 yards are preferred calibers of choice.

These are tough animals and mature rams can weigh 275-350 pounds,
and they can take some punishment.

Val Verde Ranch

The Val Verde  Ranch is a 11,000 acre ranch that’s relatively small is size when your thinking of Aoudad hunting.
But don’t let size fool you.  The location , terrain and gene pool produces some huge rams.
Including the #1 SCI Free Range Aoudad of all time.
Our normal hunting methods are to use Polaris Rangers to get close to large canyons,
then make short hikes to the rims to glass for sheep.
When a mature ram is spotted this hunt is on foot the rest of the way.
Stalks can cover a mile or more and take most of the day to get in position.
Over  the last 5 years we have had a 90% success rate on mature rams with 28-½ inch horns or better.
We take a limited number of hunts here each year with a two hunter maximum at one time.
We have a simple warm comfortable cabin that on some days has no running water depending on the weather.
We serve breakfast and dinner at camp and a field lunch during the day.
Hunters need to fly into San Antonio  in the morning the day before and rent a car it’s a 3-½ hour drive to the ranch.
Hunt Cost:
Includes 3 full days of hunting , meals and lodging.
Care of your game and transportation of your trophy to our taxidermist is also included.
